Healthy Golden Spice

I recently re-discovered a golden spice that can do far more than flavor and color curry.

Turmeric, also known as curcumin (one of its main components), has been used by Asians for centuries. Research now shows this beautiful herb also reduces inflammation (including arthritis), fights cancer, keeps ulcerative colitis in remission, and repels giardia, mosquitoes, and black flies. It also is shown to protect the brain, and investigation is under way with regard to Alzheimer's prevention.

Who knows what else scientists might discover about this delightful spice? If cooking curry isn't high on your to do list, then look for turmeric capsules from any good health food store. They're not an expensive supplement, and may well be a life saver.

This is one spice that is kind of scary to me to use. For me it has a very strong flavor and I seem to always over do it.

It's cheaper than saffron in Spanish dishes and if it can do all that, more power to it. Think I'll go make some paella!

Lisa--just go easy on amount used, and know it's doing you good :-)

Shellie--paella sounds great. Is it easy to make?

Hooray for natural health products! See NSPlife.com for info on a great source. Or a big bowl of curry over sticky rice is always a happy thing!

I recently rediscovered tumeric. I find that it needs acid to temper it's strong flavor when you are making it the strongest spice in a dish. I have a favorite chicken with lemon, garlic and tumeric recipe on my site.
